Food changes everything

About Dr. Mark Hyman

Mark Hyman, MD, is the Head of Strategy and Innovation for the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine, and founder and director of The UltraWellness Center. He is the bestselling author of numerous books, including Food: What the Heck Should I Cook?, Food: What the Heck Should I Eat?, Eat Fat, Get Thin, and The Blood Sugar Solution 10-Day Detox Diet.

Dr. Hyman believes that food has the power to change our most important global issues – transforming individual, environmental, economic, societal, and global health, and everything in between.

The Health and
Economic Impact of
Our Food System

Dr. Hyman highlights the startling economic burden of chronic disease driven by Big Food’s ultraprocessed diet that kills 11 million people every year and makes 60 percent of Americans sick with a chronic disease. Food Fix maps out a new food system that can improve public health and save trillions of dollars every year.

Saving Our Environment & Climate

Our food system—how we grow, produce, and waste food—is the number one cause of climate change and the biggest driver of the loss of our soil, water resources, biodiversity, including 90% of our edible plant species, 50% of our livestock species, and 75% of our pollinators. Food Fix highlights the the path to transform our agricultural system from an extractive, destructive system to a regenerative system that produces food that heals humans and the environment, while reversing climate change.

Challenging Politics, Social Injustice, & Information Wars

The food industry is part of the story of structural violence that hurts minorities, the poor, and the food insecure. Food Fix sheds light on this problem as well as the role of distorted nutritional science, corrupt nutrition research and lobbyists, front groups, and the overall impact on our national policies and what needs to be done to fix all of these issues.

The Global Epidemic of Chronic Disease
and The Economic Impact of Our Food

If we don’t change the food system,WE'RE GOING TO SPEND $95 TRILLIONDOLLARS ON CHRONIC DISEASEover the next 35 years
in the USA alone.

The Food Industry Preys on Children

THE AVERAGE CHILD BETWEEN 2 AND 14YEARS OF AGE SEES 10 TO 11 JUNK FOODADS PER DAY ON TVAbout 4,000 ads a year, and more on social media, are targeted to children. Industrial food harms their brains, impairs their academic performance, and threatens our national security.

The Hidden Oppression of Big Food: Social
Injustice, Poverty, and Racism

FOOD ADVERTISING ON BLACK-TARGETED TVINCREASED BY 50 PERCENTFrom 2013 to 2017, food advertising on black-targeted TV increased by 50 percent. Black teens viewed 119 percent more junk food related ads, mostly for soda, than white teens, and in the last two decades their risk of type 2 diabetes has doubled. If you are African American you are 80% more likely to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, over 4 times more likely to have kidney failure, and 3.5 times more likely to suffer amputations than whites.

Our Food System and Climate Change

OUR FOOD SYSTEM —END TO END— IS THE#1 CAUSE OF CLIMATE CHANGEdue to deforestation, loss of soil, factory farming of animals, food waste, processing, transport, and refrigeration of food.

Food Workers: The Neglected
Victims of Our Food System

"FOOD FIX is a brilliantly researched feast of facts about the most critically overlooked cause of chronic disease, global warming, and environmental degradation. It is also the Fix, demonstrating that the food sector is an astonishing yet overlooked basis for transforming agriculture, health care, mental illness, biodiversity loss, education, and economic well-being. It is a rare book, a momentous work that will inform and improve the lives of every reader, society, and country."
